Sitara Studio has functioned as a shooting studio for TV/ad shoots for over 15 years. Before that, from the ’60s through the ’90s, it was known as Natya Sampada, where Marathi nataks and play rehearsals took place.
In 2012, Nikhil Hemrajani, its current vice-president and head of operations, quit his 8-year-long career as a print journalist, and stepped in to open up the venue to more activities. Mumbai has a shortage of multi-functional performance spaces and Sitara was the perfect answer. Since then, the venue has hosted crowd-funded live music gigs, garage sales, art exhibitions, warehouse parties and international plays. Sitara Studio also houses the city’s largest jam room that is spread over 600 sq ft, with concert-grade equipment comprising guitar, bass and keyboard amplifiers, mics, speakers and a mixer.
“We want to do things at Sitara Studio that are unique, fun and accessible for most people. Airplay, the first festival of its kind in the country, perfectly fits the bill. Everyone – from kids to much old participants – will find a dance activity that they can safely and comfortably engage in,” Nikhil says.
